Scotland's National Flag
By Robert Pillans
Scotland’s Flag – The Saltire Scotland’s flag is a white diagonal cross on a blue background. It goes by the name of The Saltire and is linked to St Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland. There are many stories associated with the flag’s origin, and each one gives a different date for its appearance in our history. Some say it dates back to 761, others to 832 and many dates in between. One thing is certain, it is an old flag. The story most often told is that it came into being before a famous battle between the two old enemies, the Scots and the English. The leader of the Scots was a king known as King Angus (a good Scots name) and he was worried about the outcome as his army was heavily outnumbered. The night before the battle, he prayed long and hard for victory over the English before finally falling asleep. That night, he had a dream in which St Andrew appeared to him and promised that he would be victorious. The next morning, a revitalised King addressed the Scots and told them of his dream. He encouraged his army to take heart against the overwhelming odds and to fight with all their courage. However, this talk of a dream did little to inspire the troops and they were reluctant to fight. King Angus gave the order to face the enemy, and the army did as their King had bid them. They faced the opposing army and took up positions for the battle. At that moment, something wonderful and inspiring happened. A cloud appeared in the sky in the form of the cross of St Andrew. The scots were greatly heartened by this obvious show of support from their patron saint and took to the battlefield against the English. Despite the odds, they were victorious and the Saltire has been our country’s flag ever since.
